CalCCA

CalCCA is the statewide trade association for Community Choice Aggregators (CCAs) in California. While at Peninsula Clean Energy and Ava Community Energy, Dan was active in — and eventually led — CalCCA's Marketing Committee for a year, bringing ideas to the group, building consensus, leading working sessions, and executing two cooperative campaigns.

NEM explainer video

Solar Net Energy Metering (NEM) customers are often confused about billing once on CCA service. Through his own experience as a NEM + CCA customer, and by observing confused NEM customers on social media — especially Reddit — Dan recognized the sector needed better customer education. He wrote a script for a short explainer video for Ava Community Energy, then pitched a joint-CCA version with CCA-specific branding at the start and finish. Six CCAs signed on, and Dan led the effort that produced the video below.

KQED underwriting

Community Choice Aggregation is a difficult product to understand — it's a new category, CCAs don't hold a direct billing relationship with customers, and bill presentment is confusing. Dan wanted a regional campaign to build understanding of CCAs as a category. In 2023, he convinced five Bay Area CCAs to co-fund a cooperative campaign underwriting the local NPR affiliate, KQED, driving listeners to a landing page he built that included a "find your provider" tool. Objectives included testing the effectiveness of underwriting and testing the waters for cooperative regional broadcast campaigns.
